There are more idols than realities in the world. This little essay is a great declaration of war regarding the sounding out of idols, not just idols of the age, but eternal idols, which are here touched with a hammer like a tuning fork: there are no idols that are older, more assured, more puffed-up – and none more hollow.
I am the first immoralist. This calling follows from an insight that I was the first to articulate: that there are no moral facts. Moral and religious judgments are based on realities that do not exist. There is no such thing as moral phenomena at all, but only a moral interpretation of phenomena.

1:3. Every man and every woman is a star.

III: 17. Fear not at all; fear neither men nor Fates, nor gods, nor anything. Money fear not, nor laughter of the folk folly, nor any other power in heaven or upon the earth or under the earth. Nu is your refuge as Hadit your light; and I am the strength, force, vigour, of your arms.

III:60. There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt.

MUMON’S ZEN ADMONITIONS
Obedience to rules and precepts is a ropeless snare. Giving license to desires is the way of heretics & demons. Escape into silence is false Zen. Ignoring the karma of causation is to fall in a pit. Constant wakefulness of the absolute is to wear a yoke and chains. Think good & evil to dwell in heaven & hell. Dogmatic fidelity to Buddha and Dharma is imprisonment inside two iron mountains. Concentrating upon concentration’s breaks wastes energy. Just sitting forever meditating is dead. Proceeding is against the truth. Retreating is against principle. Neither advancing nor withdrawing is like being a breathing corpse. Tell me, what will you do? Work with great persistence to awaken in this life! Stop wallowing in sorrow.

There are many Ways. Buddha’s law is the way of salvation, Confucius’ way governs learning, there is a way of healing, of poetry, of tea, of archery & many other arts. Each must practice according to their taste.
It is said the warrior’s Way is to wield the sword & pen. Even without talent, a warrior must diligently practice with these dual tools of his craft. The warrior’s mind must always accept death.
